Part of the book series: Power Systems ((POWSYS))

Abstract

The transmission network plays a key role in making the competitive electricity market work and the first important step in any power industry restructuring is open access to transmission. Transmission services have been unbundled from generation to form separate businesses, however, when regarded as a natural monopoly the transmission sector remains more or less regulated to permit a competitive environment for generation and retail services. The operating and planning of the transmission network and the pricing of transmission services are still seen as challenges in the development of electricity markets on both theoretical and practical grounds.
