Abstract
Although haemorrhoid operations are generally classified as minor or intermediate procedures, they often involve a general anaesthetic and are not altogether risk-free; some complications can be serious, although they are fortunately rare. For these reasons, proper attention must be paid to preoperative care. Because haemorrhoids themselves are not life threatening, if a patient suffers from a preventable complication from the operation, it is a serious reproach to his surgeon, with possible medico-legal consequences.
