Abstract

Predictive control, as the name implies, is a form of control which incorporates the prediction of a system behaviour into its formulation. The prediction serves to estimate the future values of a variable based on the available system information. The more representative the information is of the system, the better is the accuracy of the prediction. The estimate of the future system variables can then be used in the design of control laws to achieve a good control performance, which is usually to drive or maintain the output to a desired set-point. This class of control methods which incorporates information or assumptions pertaining to the future values of the system output are generally referred to as predictive control.
