Abstract

This chapter1 is the first of three case studies on model-based object recognition, which will be presented in Part C of this monograph. We have chosen to begin this part with optical character recognition and use some of the concepts developed in this chapter to introduce a 2-D system for the recognition of objects by parts in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 then goes on to introduce a range of 3-D object recognition systems and provides a detailed case study on a system which recognises free-form objects. Figure 5.1 provides a diagrammatic representation of the position of this chapter within the overall monograph.
