Structured Parity Equations in Fault Detection and Isolation

  • Janos J. Gertler

Mathematically, the inconsistency between the actual and expected behaviour is expressed as residuals. Residuals are quantities that are nominally zero; they become non-zero if faults (or disturbances, etc) are present. There are several ways to generate residuals of which the parity equation approach is one. Alternative approaches include diagnostic observers and Kalman filters.
