Myopathic disorders may be inherited or acquired. The term muscular dystrophy refers to a group of genetically determined disorders characterised by progressive degenerative changes in muscle fibres, without primary abnormality in the lower motor neuron. They are classified according to their clinical, morphological and genetic characteristics (see Chap. 5).
