Placental Enzymes

  • Chapter
Placental Function Tests

Abstract

The human placenta contains a wide variety of enzymes, most of which represent the range of structural and metabolic enzymes found in all mammalian cells. Included among these are the enzymes responsible for placental synthesis of proteins and steroids, e.g. 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. However, none of these distinguish the placenta from other endocrine tissues and as they are not ‘exported’ from the trophoblast there is no obvious change in their circulating levels.
