Summary
The microbiota colonizing the sulcus around osseointegrated oral implants (OH) has been reported to resemble the microbiota of healthy periodontal sites. Acute failure of implants has been associated with bacteria commonly found in periodontal abscesses or in active periodontitis. The longterm success reported for OH in edentulous patients may reflect, in part, a delay in implant colonization by pathogens due to a lack of an intraoral reservoir for fastidious species which depend on the environment of periodontal pockets for survival. Such a reservoir is present at natural tooth sites adjacent to implants placed in partially edentulous patients; adjacent teeth and implants have been reported to harbour similar microbial types.
