Abstract
Although the following description of the physics and design of CO2 lasers will be rather more detailed than the earlier discussion in Chap. 1, it is not my intention suddenly to change style to the highly specialised language and mathematics usually associated with laser physics. Readers who require a high level of theoretical information will find that they are very well provided for in the large number of laser related physics textbooks which have proliferated over the past 20 years or so.
