Differential Diagnosis: Back Pain and Osteoporosis

  • Chapter
Osteoporosis in Clinical Practice

Abstract

Back pain is very common in industrial countries. In Europe and the USA the lifetime prevalence is 60%, and 35% of the population suffer from back pain at least once a year. The incidence of back pain in elderly people is even higher than this. The causes of back pain are considered to be multifactorial and in explaining the high incidence rates, osteoporotic fractures appear not to be considered as important as chronic musculoligamentous strain, osteoarthritis, chronic intervertebral disc disease, facet joints and spinal stenosis. However, pain is still one of the most limiting symptoms for osteoporosis patients.
