Abstract
There is some confusion in the literature between the different types of pancreatitis, even though these have different causes and geographical localisation in the world. Following the Marseille-Rome 1988 Classification (Sarles et al. 1989a,b) acute pancreatitis is defined not as a disease but as a series of lesions (oedema, fat necrosis, necrosis, haemorrhagic necrosis) which may be due to either extrapancreatic causes such as gall stones, hyperlipidaemia or may be a complication of chronic pancreatic lesions such as chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer. Acute pancreatitis may recur when its cause persists. When it is not due to a chronic pancreatic lesion, it heals without sequelae if the patient survives. Though frequently confused with chronic pancreatitis when it recurs, acute pancreatitis will not be studied here. There are very few studies on the geographical distribution of acute pancreatitis.
