Abstract

The existence of numerous uncommon but fascinating disorders contributes to the joy and the frustration of the study of neurology. Hereditary disorders affecting the spinal cord are uncommon, incompletely understood and many lack autopsy confirmation of lesions directly affecting the spinal cord. By their very nature nutritional disorders resulting from vitamin deficiency tend to have widespread effects on the nervous system and often features of peripheral nerve involvement overshadow those caused by central nervous system damage. The conditions described here are those in which spinal cord involvement is considered to be a major component of the disease process.
