Abstract

The skeleton is mesenchymal in origin. Most of its components pass through membranous and cartilaginous stages of development before becoming ossified, although in some parts there is only a membranous stage. These processes of endochondral and intramembranous ossification are well described in standard textbooks of histology. A detailed account of normal bone, its development and the structure and function of bone cells is available in Revell (1986).
