Abstract
The main purpose of any pre-placement medical examination is to ensure that the potential employee is medically suited to the proposed employment. If the employment is at a remote offshore location, this factor must be taken into account, in addition to the medical requirements of the job itself. It is important to detect and exclude potential workers who may have some disease or disability which could endanger their lives in an isolated situation, or could develop into an acute medical emergency requiring urgent evacuation ashore.
