Abstract
The gross examination and sampling of surgical resections and biopsy specimens for histology is an important responsibility of the histopathologist, a detailed practical guide to which can be found elsewhere (Kennedy, 1977). Blocks of tissue for histology should always be taken with due regard to the particular problem under investigation, conscious of the local anatomy, and with the aim of minimising sampling error.
