Expert Systems: Changing Perspectives in Applications in the Automotive Industry

  • Chris Tompsett

Expert systems have been successfully applied in industry and commerce since the early 1980s. However, the number of expert system projects that become fully implemented systems remains remarkably small — of the order of 1%–5%. There is considerable variation between market sectors, and the field of mechanical engineering, including the automotive industry, has developed more slowly than most. Some notable successes have been achieved but the scale and scope of the projects varies considerably between the USA and elsewhere.
