The majority of patients in our series have seen, on average, three physicians, often including urologists and gynecologists, before the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis is even entertained. It is astounding to find so many patients given the diagnosis of recurrent urinary tract infection, and treated with multiple courses of antibiotics, without positive urine cultures.
