Abstract

Since the influential work on the relational data model by E. F. Codd [Codd, 1970], the relational approach has gained rapid popularity in database management systems [Yannakoudakis, 1988]. The relational data model is well known for its simplicity, data independence and theoretical foundation. Languages for Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) are actively being developed, among which one of the most prominent is the Structured Query Language (SQL) originally proposed by the IBM Corporation [IBM, 1982, 1983].
