Some Further Considerations About the Interrelationship Between Information and Energy

  • Chapter
Information and the Internal Structure of the Universe

Abstract

Energy and information are readily interconvertible. As we have discussed in detail in previous chapters, entropy, which in some text books is defined as “bound” energy or energy unavailable for the performance of work, is in reality a measure of the changes in information. If the conclusion at the end of chapter 4 proves correct, then the information changes accompanying altered physical states imply that one joule per degree (K) is equivalent to of the order of 1023 bits.
