Networks as a Basis for Production-Integrated Quality Management

Abstract

Networks providing data communication between sources and destinations at each of the logical information levels of a company and between these different levels are a central element in computer integrated manufacturing. While internationally standardized open communication systems are already available for the planning and design sectors, there are still difficulties in linking the field level to the information flow of integrated production systems, owing to the lack of internationally standardized communication systems. The paper uses examples of quality-relevant data transmission to determine communication system requirements for the field sector and to compare them with existing solutions. The advantages and disadvantages of open communication systems are discussed and their limitations indicated.
