Abstract
For large enterprises it is important to improve information flow, and hence facilitate collaboration. In such systems it is incorrect to assume dedicated involvement. Similarly we have to accept that complete data consistancy is not an achievable goal. Information systems which support collaborations have to respect these restrictions, and then use high-level knowledge about data and working-practices. This is illustrated by an example from health-informatics, and some related algorithms. Its use of application-specific knowledge to organise distribution, autonomy, stability, security and recovery raise questions about the utility of building-in such mechanisms at the memory-level.
