Abstract
The books which Charnley published in 1950 and 1953 are major works which make a significant contribution to orthopaedic surgery. The first was The Closed Treatment of Common Fractures (1950)1 and the second Compression Arthrodesis (1953)2, both published by E. & S. Livingstone Ltd (now Churchill Livingstone) of Edinburgh and London. These contain many of the ideas which were included in his papers, but the two books are important because they allowed Charnley space in which to expound his personal opinions.
Books we are told propose to instruct or amuse... All that is literature seeks to communicate power; all that is not literature, to communicate knowledge.
