Abstract
Charnley began writing early in his career, as his student and wartime articles have shown. Between 1945 and 1960 he published papers on a variety of subjects which indicated the breadth of his interest and the contribution which he made to the speciality before he became totally involved with arthroplasty of the hip joint. The period chosen is not entirely arbitrary and is appropriate because from 1960 onwards he wrote only ten papers on general orthopaedic subjects; these are included in this chapter because they can be regarded as left over from his ‘pre-arthroplasty’ era.
Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man and writing an exact man.
