Abstract
On taking up his appointment at the Manchester Medical School after the war, Charnley soon found that routine teaching of medical students was frustrating and kept him from the work he really wanted to do; although he remained an enthusiastic and popular postgraduate teacher. From 1959 onwards, when he was concentrating his efforts at Wrightington, he determined never to undertake undergraduate teaching again. Sir Harry Platt wrote to him in 1967 about plans for ‘teaching orthopaedics in the Manchester of the future’. Charnley explained his attitude:
Ever since my own student days I have believed that the idea of a Teaching Hospital trying to cope with teaching medical students, carrying-out first-class clinical work… and doing research, all simultaneously, is futile. The teaching of undergraduates should be raised to a high professional level by doctors paid well enough to study teaching techniques...
I have proved to myself that immense progress in the quality of services to patients in a Welfare State and immense contributions to basic science and surgery, can only be made by breaking out from the conventional atmosphere of the Teaching Hospital. The only form of planned teaching I am prepared to do is: (1) to teach the teachers of undergraduates, and (2) postgraduate teaching, and even this very selective. (5.12.67)
