Abstract

The microscopical confirmation of the diagnosis of carcinoma of the oesophagus, together with its history and pathogenesis, are discussed in this chapter. Rational management also requires assessment of the extent of the disease (staging) and prediction of its behaviour (cell typing and grading), which also come within the purview of the pathologist.
