Management of Complications of Intrathoracic Resection

  • Chapter
Management of Oesophageal Carcinoma

Abstract

Considerable morbidity and not infrequent mortality attends the surgical treatment of oesophageal carcinoma. Clinical impression would suggest that patients either have a relatively trouble-free postoperative recovery or a prolonged and morbid postsurgical course. Two major factors in postresection morbidity — pulmonary complications and anastomotic leakage — will be reviewed in some detail in this chapter, and other complications will be mentioned briefly. Specific complications relating to individual types of oesophagectomy technique, e.g., stricture formation, have been dealt with in previous chapters and will not be discussed here.
