Effects of human seminal plasma on the lymphocyte response to viral infection

Abstract

Human seminal plasma suppresses various components of the immune system in vitro and in vivo. The proliferative response of both T and B lymphocytes to mitogen or antigen;(1.2) recognition of target antigens by macrophages and polymorphonuclear leucocytes;(1.3) recognition and destruction of tumour or viral infected cells by natural killer cells (NK) and cytotoxic T cells;(2.4) and phagocytosis by macrophages(3) can all be inhibited by seminal plasma in vitro. Mouse prostatic fluid inhibits complement-mediated haemolysis.(5) Most of these effects can be achieved with very low concentrations of seminal plasma (0.05-0.1% by volume) and can be demonstrated with seminal plasma from several mammalian species.(6)
