Abstract
Although the spleen is easily demonstrated on CT scans of the abdomen, this modality is seldom used specifically and solely for the purpose of delineating splenic anatomy and pathology in children. Indeed, very little has been written with specific reference to CT scanning of the spleen in the pediatric age group. The appearance of the spleen on CT is always assessed in children having scans to delineate problems involving other areas of the abdomen (e.g., patients with lymphoma or trauma). CT of the spleen is occasionally performed when clarification of an abnormality suspected on the basis of radionuclide or sonographic examination is necessary. We have used sonography successfully as the initial imaging modality to study children with a left upper quadrant mass when the clinician is unsure whether this represents splenomegaly or a separate mass lesion. It is unusual that CT is required to delineate the anatomy of the left upper quadrant in greater detail because of an inadequate sonographic examination.
