Abstract
The normal and pathological gallbladder and biliary tract are usually exquisitely imaged with sonograhy. Radionuclide studies using 99mTclabeled N-substituted iminodiacetic acids such as HIDA are valuable in defining the patency and anatomy of the biliary tract in those children in whom it is felt that the anatomical information obtained from the sonographic study is inadequate. These scans are also useful in determining biliary function, particularly in neonates with jaundice and in those children suspected of having cholecystitis. Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography may be used to define the detailed anatomy of the biliary tract in selected patients in whom less invasive procedures are equivocal or nondiagnostic.
