Abstract

The proportion of migraine patients with classical aura symptoms (i.e. the ratio of numbers of patients with common and classical migraine) is very dependent not only on the nature of the headache population studied in any survey, but also on the diagnostic criteria used to decide which patients shall be included as common migraine. The relatively clear-cut nature of classical migraine attacks makes their prevalence in the general population easier to establish—58.4% of the 426 patients studied by Waters (1973) had migrainous headache preceded by a “warning”. In the absence of other visual disturbances most authorities do not include blurring of vision as a feature of classical migraine.
