Abstract

Only a minority of adults will deny that they suffer occasional headaches. In a population survey based on a South Wales electoral register for example, Waters (1973) established that 74% of men and 92% of women aged 21–34 had experienced at least one headache in the previous year. These figures declined with advancing age, so that only 22% of men over 75 had had one or more headache in the previous year (Table 1.1). Only a minority had ever sought medical advice about their headaches.
