Abstract

These benign tumours occur within the muscular layers of the oesophagus. They may become large and lobulated or even cirsoid. The mucosa remains intact unless one ill-advisedly attempts endoscopic biopsy. Tumours within the lower oesophagus may be approached through a left thoracotomy, but those elsewhere within the thoracic oesophagus should be approached through a right thoracotomy at the level of the main tumour mass. A double-lumen tube will allow collapse of the ipsilateral lung, facilitating exposure.
