Abstract

Plasma exchange has been used as a therapeutic tool since the beginning of the century (Abel et al., 1914). However its use has increased markedly since the development of efficient machines to perform the manoeuvre. A distinction is sometimes drawn between the terms plasmapheresis and plasma exchange. Plasmapheresis (plasma + Gr. aphairesis or removal) strictly means the removal of plasma (Buskard, 1978). Plasma exchange implies the removal of plasma and replacement with whole or fractionated plasma or plasma substitutes. Large-volume plasmapheresis is not possible without replacement, so plasma exchange is the more appropriate term.
