Abstract
The relationship between elevated serum viscosity levels and hyperproteinaemic states has been recognised for almost half a century. Interestingly, most of the earlier reports of this association related to patients with myelomatosis (Albers, 1937; Reimann, 1932; Wintrobe and Buell, 1933) and it was not until 1944 that increased serum viscosity levels were observed by Waldenström in patients with macroglobulinaemia (Waldenström, 1944).
