Abstract
This paper presents a new approach based on an extensive use of aggregate structures in hypertexts. We show an original method that induces automatically dynamic aggregates from an unstructured set of nodes. Structures of lists, graphs, trees, partitions and hypergraphs can be generated depending on the properties of the generic relations used among a set of nodes.
We extend the classical operations dedicated to aggregates, including various new transformation operations acting on such structures. We also discuss user interface issues related to the visualization and direct interaction with aggregates, as a new visual metaphor to express user queries.
In order to experiment our concepts, we developped a prototype called DH3CI that applies our approach on a bibliographic database containing more than 10000 nodes.
This work has been carried out in the framework of the “Hipocampe” project. It has been partially sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation (grant number 21-27911.89) and IBM Switzerland.
