Abstract
Teleconferencing, groupware, electronic meeting systems — these terms indicate technologies that claim to be of great importance for the support of information exchange and cooperation in organisations. Particularly, the development of high-capacity infrastructures, often subsumed under the buzzword “electronic highway”, is hailed as the major driving force for the evolution of these systems. However, their design and evaluation is often technology-driven. The development and introduction of multimedia groupware would progress more adequately if they would be evaluated systematically in the light of real tasks and contexts of cooperating people.
