Abstract

At about the same time that Kaposi’s sarcoma was recognised in homosexual men (Hymes et al. 1981) it emerged that there was a high incidence in the same population group of thrombocytopenia which was indistinguishable from immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) seen in young women (Morris et al. 1982). Since the early 1980s the numbers of cases of HIV infection and AIDS have escalated both in groups at risk of infection (homosexualmen, haemophiliacs, intravenous drug abusers), in their sexual partners and offspring (in the case of females) and increasingly in the heterosexual population. It has gradually become obvious that haematological manifestations and complications of HIV infection are manifold.
