Abstract
In 1992, the World Health Organization estimated that more than 6 million people in sub-Saharan Africa were infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) - 2.5% of the adult population. This accounted for over 60% of the estimated worldwide HIV infections (Global Programme on AIDS 1992). Admittedly, generalisations concerning the extent and distribution of HIV infection are difficult to make. Prevalence rates between countries, urban and rural areas and even within individual city localities may differ greatly. However, evidence indicates that the spread of HIV continues unabated in areas of both high and low prevalence.
