Abstract

The Internet is the subject of numerous books and continues to attract a great deal of publicity and worldwide interest. At one level it represents a similar environment to X.400 for global electronic messaging, but its traffic patterns are much greater, and in addition it offers a far wider range of other services, some of which are not currently included in the X.400 environment. Its origins are from the US military, spreading into the academic and research communities with government funding. As colleges and universities around the world set up their own computing environments the Transmission Control Program/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) architecture became a popular choice. It was not long before campus networks based upon TCP/IP suite were being interconnected or internet-worked — hence the birth of the Internet.
