Abstract
This chapter examines in detail the underlying open system standards on which electronic commerce and business communications is based. By definition it introduces jargon, since this is the way of the standards makers, but hopefully the accompanying explanations will allow the reader to navigate through the text without too much distraction. While the base Electronic Mail (E-mail) and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standards are mature, they continue to evolve in the light of experience and fresh requirements.
