Cystic Pancreatic Neoplasms

  • Chapter
Pathology of the Pancreas

Abstract

Most cystic neoplasms of the pancreas arise from the exocrine components of the gland. Such lesions are much less common than solid exocrine carcinomas. Cystic change in endocrine tumours of the pancreas is unusual (see p. 208), and cystic vascular tumours of the pancreas are even more unusual. The lesions to be considered in this chapter are:

  • The serous cystadenomas, also known as microcystic, glycogen-rich cystadenomas. Such tumours are nearly always benign.

  • A type of mucin-secreting cystic tumour with much larger loculi that may behave, even for years, as a benign cystadenoma, but which has, nevertheless, a malignant potential.

  • A mucin-secreting cystadenocarcinoma that seems, in most cases, to be the result of malignant change in part, or parts, of the wall of a pre-existing mucinous cystic tumour.
