Abstract
The future of a modern industrial economy depends to a significant extent on the strength of its manufacturing industry, and the skills of the workforce. Our focus of attention in this chapter is on engineering skills, their cultural context, and the extent to which they can be sustained and developed through an approach to education and training which is based on competence. It is argued that a broader approach is required, giving due attention to the tacit knowledge of the skilled worker and the culture of working life.
