Abstract
Asset-managing organisations implement information systems for a variety of reasons which range from process automation to creating informationenabled integrated views of lifecycle asset management. However, these organisations have reported inconsistent value from these systems due to an assortment of strategic, management and operational issues. The primary factor contributing to this variation is a technology-centric approach to information system implementation which treats these systems as passive technology constructs whose behaviour is predictable and which provide the same level of service regardless of the context within which they are deployed. However, information systems are social systems strongly embedded in the social and physical structures of organisations, and therefore human, organisational and social factors have a direct relationship with the use and institutionalisation of technology. Information system implementation, therefore, is a continuous process aimed at improving organisational responsiveness to external and internal challenges by aligning these systems with strategic business requirements. This paper explains various perspectives on information system implementation and the alignment of these systems with strategic business considerations. It develops a framework aimed at aligning and matching information system capabilities with business objectives and asset management requirements. This framework treats information as the key enabler of asset management and emphasises that in order to achieve desired results, information system implementation must serve organisational areas which influence technology implementation as well as the areas which are influenced by it. This framework treats information system implementation as a means to translate strategic asset management objectives into operational actions by enabling asset lifecycle processes, facilitating organisational integration, and creating a culture which values information and is conducive to organisational efficiency and growth. At the same time, it shows how information generated by these systems could inform asset management strategies for strategic reorientation and recalibration. In this way, information system implementation becomes a generative learning process which helps in the systems’ institutionalisation and contributes to the maturity of technical, social and organisational contexts of organisations.
