Abstract
Simulation tools are useful for accelerating the development and verification of switching converters and their control systems. In this chapter, three simulation tools that are commonly used for simulating switched electrical systems at the circuit and system levels are introduced. The simulation tools, SimPowerSystems (SPS) within Matlab®–Simulink®, PLECS® and PSIM®, are all capable of modelling a power electronic system comprising a converter and controller. The differences lie in the implementation of the switching and solver algorithms, the available features and other included tools that are of use in the design or modelling process. These differences and features will be discussed in detail in this chapter. An example based on a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) converter will also be presented to demonstrate the performance of the simulation tools.
