Abstract

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), also known as kallikrein 3 (KLK3), is a 34kD glycoprotein, encoded by the KLK3 gene on chromosome 19q13. It is a peptidase secreted into the semen by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. PSA is also secreted in other body fluids including the female ejaculate, where PSA levels are similar to those found in semen; as well as amniotic fluid, breast milk and the secretions from urethral glands. Serum PSA may also be detectable in uterine, breast and lung cancers.
