Pathology of the Pancreas

Abstract

Most of the mesenchymal neoplasms that occur primarily in soft tissues can arise in the pancreas, but they are extremely rare. The pancreas is much more commonly involved by extrapancreatic mesenchymal neoplasia secondarily involving the pancreas, either by direct invasion or, very occasionally, as a metastasis. It is not always possible to clearly determine the primary origin of a neoplasm on imaging techniques and, therefore, extrapancreatic tumors may be mistaken for primary pancreatic neoplasms on radiology. The morphological features, immunohistochemical profile, and cytogenetics of those mesenchymal tumors that may mimic other pancreatic neoplasms are discussed. Non-Hodgkin lymphomas may also occur in the pancreas although secondary involvement is much more common than primary pancreatic lymphoma. Primary lymphoma is briefly discussed in this chapter.
