Abstract
Drainage of the upper urinary tract by insertion of an open nephrostomy has been an option for more than a 100 years, but the percutaneous approach, with which are so familiar, has only been a viable, widely available option for the last 40 years. Roughly over the same time period, internalized “double J stents” have become available for retrograde, antegrade, and open drainage or splinting of the injured or reconstructed, ureter and upper urinary tract.
