The Female Genital Tract

Cytopathology

Abstract

Cytology has been used as a screening tool for cervical precancerous lesions for several decades and has resulted in remarkable reduction in the relative incidence and mortality of cervical cancer in nations with an organized screening program. Although the position of cervical cytology may change in the coming years with the introduction of HPV testing and other screening techniques, cytology is likely to remain pivotal to diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasias. Other applications of cytology in the female genital tract are endometrial and ovarian cytology, as well as cytology of peritoneal washings.
