Abstract

POEMS is a rare disease involving a multiplicity of systems, resulting in a unique set of symptoms and signs as illustrated in this case. A high index of suspicion is needed to enable early diagnosis and institution of effective treatment before too much irreversible neurological deficit has accrued. Specialist tests and a specialist centre for treatment may be required.
