Abstract
Mechanical energy can be broadly classified into potential energy and kinetic energy. Potential energy exists in all force fields, such as gravitation, electrostatic, and magnetic fields. Potential energy refers to the energy any object has due to its position in a force field. Therefore, potential energy is defined as the work done against a given force in changing the position of an object with respect to a reference position. Kinetic energy is the work required to accelerate an object to a given speed. Mechanical energy due to the pressure of the fluid is known as pressure energy. This chapter discusses various forms of mechanical energy as well as electric energy. Compression and expansion work are emphasized. There are 16 example problems in the text and 76 practice problems at the end of the chapter.
